Asus ROG G74 SX : Will it have the same problems as G73?

Asus showcased the successor to their flagship gaming laptop, Sandybridge processor, nVidia 560GTX GPU.. looks good on paper but will it deliver?

Asus showed the G74 SX 3D at the CeBit 2011 in Germany.
Let's take a quick look at the specs:

  • Processor: Intel Core i7 2630QM
  • GPU: nVidia Geforce 560M
  • RAM: 4 slots , Max 16 GB, 1333 MHz DDR III
  • Display:  17.3" FHD LED , /3D Matte Display (non glare)
  • Expansion : USB 3.0/2.0 , HDMI out, Vga out, headphone, mic, SD card Reader
  • Storage: Dual hard drives supported.(no RAID options)

These specs are a little hazy and some things need to be cleared up:
  • Support for RAID O/1?
  • eSATA?
  • Support for SATA  6GBPS?
  • Still No PCI epress slot????
  • Thunderbolt / light peak port??
  • Price and release date also need to be cleared up
Its predecessor, the ASUS G73 is a fine gaming machine and great value for money "IF" it works properly. Somehow, if you manage to get a problem free laptop then consider yourself lucky. The best feature of G73 is its cool stealth design but  its legacy is plagued with faulty hardware and software combination on top of poor support.
  • Touchpad problems ( Acts crazy, no solution)
  • Keyboard problems ( Laaaaaag , don't type fast)
  • Bios update/ flashing problems (don't flash or you'll brick your system)
  • Audio / Creative Audigy support problems
  • GSOD/ BSOD/ VBios
  • SSDs installation (not a big problem, but it should have been plug and play rather than activate first)

The Asus G74 has changed the only good thing about the G73 and that's the design, the specs look good on paper, but it needs to perform well and most important of all, "problem free" if it wants to get the support of heartbroken  G73 owners. Secondly, whenever the G74 is released, Asus should come out openly and clearly stating that this machine will not have the shortcomings of its predecessor

Take a look at this video ( Credit to notebook check)

And here's the official Asus Promo for the G74 SX:

Here's  the Official Video of Asus G73JH by Asus :

Conclusion:
  • It is a cool looking machine, Good specs, good gaming potential.
  • Hopefully price will not be above 2000$
  • Whenever it is released , would I buy it straight away?.. a Big NO. (not counting the review model)
  • I'll tread carefully, see the reviews, and read some forums, user experiences etc
  • Unless it is problem free, I'll be hesitant to invest my hard earned cash in this gaming laptop.
Update:
Some of the questions have been answered as the Asus G74SX has achieved the "pre order" status.
price: 1979 $ for the 3D model and 1759$ for the Full HD model.
no eSATA, no pci express slot. no RAID option.

  1. Incoming a piece of garbage with a broken keyboard and touchpad with a year worth of promises for "BIOS Updates" resulting in a realization that it's a hardware problem.

  2. The g73JH was the model with all the problems. it was the version with the ATI gpu, the g73JW is by most accounts a very capable machine with none of the old problems. the keyboard lag is fixed, the touchpad fixed, the gpu is problem free. I have not had a SINGLE problem with mine and I got it the week it was released.

  6. One thing you left out:

The G73 also has defective camera problems. ASUS uses several manufacturers for its cameras and one of them (Azurewave) has very poor cameras. (5 FPS max on any res)

  8. Have had a G53JW ( 15 inch version of the G73 ) for almost 9 months now and not a single problem. Updated the bios, no problem! Don't like the very narrow vertical viewing angle but, other than that, one sweet machine! Loaded it with a Samsung 128GB SSD for the operating system. BIG improvement over the HDD it comes with.

  9. Have a G73JH with ATI video card and 740m. Had it for 7 months now, no problems at all. THING IS A BEAST! Like Nvidia but ATI card delivers and Run's like a champ. VERY satisfied. Thnx Asus

  10. My G73JH with ATI 5870 is working ok, except for the touchpad and keyboard. The touchpad has a mind of its own,it decides itself when it wants to work or not to work. so frustrating and still no fix from asus. that's poor support. I use a wired usb laser mouse. otherwise it is a fine laptop

  14. Hello guys,
I'm going to but a gaming rig for 3000$.Thought G74SX-3DE is a good choice. But with all reviews I read here, looks like I should look for another brand.

  15. I have had a g73 sw-a1 for many moons now lol. (since they first came out, I did return it when the recall came and got a replacement. I have to say that both of them worked flawlessly. I have never had a single glitch and I never had to do a bios update. These were rock solid machines and now I have a g74sw and it is great as well.

  16. Got a G53SW on Dec5'11 and first noticed the wifi n adapter doesn't EVER connect higher than 65Mbps. Also just flashed the bios to 203 (downloaded from ASUS' support site) thinking it might fix the issue (even though it doesn't say anything about it) and now the system is bricked. Can't turn it on. Followed some painful steps just to remove the cmos battery (it is extremely inconveniently placed)...and no dice. System won't turn on. Battery/AC indicator lights don't turn on. It's nothing but a paper weight right now. *Really* hoping ASUS tech support is going to do right by me...have VIP warranty/support. We'll see. Not very positive after reading many forums...

  17. The g74 has gone a very long way and now the g75 shines right over it that the g74 prices are cheaper now. What are the differences? 24gb memory, NVIDIA GTX 780M, 256 SSD, 1TB HD...ooooo weeeee. Here's the rest of the specs
