Sir Richard Branson! Thou Shalt not pollute !

The famous multifaceted billionaire, adventurer, philanthropist, is at it again. This time he vows to reduce the carbon footprint of his airline. i.e. Virgin Atlantic

Dr Jennifer Holmgren CEO LanzaTech, Sir Richard Branson, Steve Ridgeway CEO Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic is partnering with LanzaTech, a company that specializes in carbon re-use technology, to recycle waste gases from steel mills. They'll be taking exhaust gases from up the chimney stacks and turning it into aviation fuel. By capturing those gases that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, Virgin would be able to reduce its overall carbon footprint without necessarily reducing the carbon output of its individual aircraft. The airline is expecting to achieve this by the year 2014, and will begin trials on its routes from London to Shanghai and Delhi around that time.

How it works?

The LanzaTech's gas to fuel platform captures a variety of waste (carbon) gas streams commonly found in steel manufacturing industry, refining and chemical industries, Biomass / MSW syngas, reformed natural gas.
Within the bioreacter, the LanzaTech microbes consume the carbon monoxide containing gas for the fermentation to alcohols. The resulting net products are withdrawn and recovered, yielding various high purity alcohols.
These alcohols can either be used directly as fuels, or intermediates to build "drop in" hydrocarbon fuels, such as "fully synthetic jet fuels" via catalytic processes
